Conservative airway strategy may improve outcomes in comatose patients with acute poisoning
Patients who were randomized to no intubation unless they met an emergency criterion did better on a composite end point of in-hospital death and length of ICU and hospital stay than those treated under routine practice, a French trial found.

Beta-lactam plus doxycycline associated with lower mortality in older patients with CAP
Compared to other guideline-concordant empiric therapies for patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), beta-lactam plus doxycycline was associated with lower 30-day and 90-day mortality in a Veterans Affairs cohort study.

Fewer than 1 in 4 hospitals have both low-mortality and low-cost care for AMI, HF, and pneumonia
There were statistically significant but weak inverse correlations between hospitals' 30-day mortality rates and payments for the conditions, suggesting substantial opportunities to improve the efficiency and value of care, according to the study authors.

Doxycycline for CAP associated with lower C. diff risk than azithromycin
In a retrospective study of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) patients, treatment with doxycycline instead of azithromycin was associated with a particularly significant reduction in risk of Clostridioides difficile infection among those who had already had C. diff within the past year.
