Elevated risk of hospitalization, death after COVID-19 dwindles by six months
A hospitalization for COVID-19 carries higher mortality risk than one for flu for only 90 days, one study found, while another showed that veterans who had COVID-19 actually had lower mortality risk than matched uninfected peers in the subsequent six months to two years.

Study finds limited value to procalcitonin in identifying BSI on admission
Among patients with suspected bloodstream infections (BSIs) who had blood cultures and a procalcitonin test on admission, the sensitivity of procalcitonin at a cutoff of 0.5 ng/mL was 68%, and empiric antibiotic therapy use was not meaningfully different with positive or negative results.

U.S. uses mechanical ventilation much more than Canada, England, especially for elderly
Invasive mechanical ventilation was provided to 209 patients ages 80 years or older per 100,000 population in England, compared to 694 in Canada and 1,788 in the U.S., an analysis of 2018 data showed.

90% of patients with Cryptococcus infections were HIV-negative, study finds

Intensive treatment may increase adverse events in older adults with elevated blood pressure
Intensive blood pressure treatment in the first 48 hours of hospitalization for a noncardiovascular diagnosis was associated with greater risk of a composite outcome that included cardiac injury, acute kidney injury, and transfer to the ICU.
