Tele-ICU care linked to improved outcomes for nighttime ICU admissions
Among patients admitted to ICUs from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., risk-adjusted mortality was 10.8% before tele-ICU implementation versus 7.0% afterward, while no difference was seen among patients admitted during the day.

New research looks at drug safety in COVID-19, quarantine length in asymptomatic contacts
Use of immunosuppressive drugs and renin-angiotensin system inhibitors does not appear to adversely affect outcomes in patients with COVID-19, and a seven-day quarantine may be sufficient in asymptomatic contacts with confirmed COVID-19 exposure.

Chest X-rays, long-term outcomes in COVID-19, data on health care workers and vaccines
A negative chest X-ray ruled out severe outcomes in many ED patients, and long-term effects were common after hospitalization, studies found. Vaccine research highlighted health care workers' reluctance to get vaccinated and the safety and efficacy of the latest vaccine candidate.

COVID-19 research looks at aspirin, disparities, long-term outcomes
Recent aspirin use may be associated with improved COVID-19 outcomes, and hospitals had widely differing mortality rates in April 2020. Half of discharged patients reported ongoing symptoms at four months, and most ICU patients showed evidence of impairments at one month, new studies found.

Training in time-limited trials associated with less use of nonbeneficial ICU treatments
In a pre- and postintervention quality improvement study, physicians at three academic hospitals in California were trained to use time-limited trials of interventions in communication and care planning with families and surrogate decision makers of critically ill ICU patients.

Opioid exposure linked to increased risk of delirium in critically ill adults
A Dutch study found that opioid use in the ICU increased the daily risk of delirium by 45% in a dose-dependent manner and that this increased risk was independent of the degree of pain present.

Researchers used a 20% random sample of Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries to compare receipt of invasive mechanical ventilation among Asian American and White patients hospitalized in the last 30 days of life.
