Checklist use before endotracheal intubation did not improve most outcomes
While use of a preparatory preintubation checklist was not associated with improved survival in critically ill patients, it was associated with decreased hypoxia, a systematic review and meta-analysis found.

Survival of critical illness in ICU linked to subsequent suicide, self-harm
Compared to hospital survivors who never required ICU admission, those who were discharged from an ICU had a higher risk of suicide and self-harm in a Canadian study. Risk factors included previous psychiatric diagnoses and use of life-support interventions in the ICU.

Antipsychotic medications not effective in ICU patients with delirium
A systematic review and meta-analysis found no improvements in delirium- or coma-free days, mortality, duration of mechanical ventilation, or ICU or hospital length of stay in critically ill patients with delirium who received antipsychotics versus those who did not.

Updated recommendations on corticosteroids in sepsis, ARDS, CAP
New guidance from the Society of Critical Care Medicine includes conditional recommendations to administer corticosteroids to patients with septic shock or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and a strong recommendation for severe community-acquired pneumonia (CAP).

Only half of ICU patients with alcohol use disorder received thiamine, despite guidelines
An observational study of ICU patients with alcohol use disorder found that use of thiamine supplementation was 59% for those admitted for alcohol withdrawal, 26% for septic shock, 41% for traumatic brain injury, and 24% for diabetic ketoacidosis.

Study finds ECMO patient selection inconsistent, offers lessons for decision makers
Reviewing records of 81 patients considered for venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) at a single center, researchers identified a total of 15 contraindications. All but four contraindications that were invoked to decline one patient were present in a patient determined to be a candidate for ECMO.

Studies assess responses, reactions to vaccines; long-term effects of COVID-19 infection
Recent COVID-19 vaccine studies showed good response in pregnant women, as well as possible localized rashes from the Moderna vaccine. Analyses of ICU patients and those treated at a post-COVID-19 clinic highlighted the long-term effects of the virus, and a study found that dialysis patients maintained antibodies six months after COVID-19 infection.
