Risk factors may not accurately identify complicated Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia
The Infectious Diseases Society of America's criteria for determining complicated S. aureus bacteremia had low to moderate predictive value and could lead to unnecessary antibiotic treatment, according to a prospective cohort study in the Netherlands.

Hospitalizations for opportunistic infections in HIV declined from 2011 to 2018
While the rate of hospitalization for an opportunistic infection per 100,000 U.S. patients with HIV went down, the associated inpatient mortality rate held stable, at 5.9%, and disparities by age, sex, race, and insurance status were found in a recent study.

Latest COVID-19 research focuses on test accuracy, experimental therapies
Recent articles offered differing estimates of the risk of false negatives in testing for SARS-CoV-2, and studies reported the effectiveness of shared ventilators and a cancer drug for patients with severe COVID-19. The FDA revoked its authorization for hydroxychloroquine.

Hospitals that steward antibiotics well share common factors
Hospitals where pharmacists reported feeling that they are respected by their hospitalist colleagues and considered valuable team members were less likely to overuse antibiotics, a small survey study of antibiotic stewardship programs found.

Algorithms predicted antibiotic resistance profiles of inpatients' bacterial infections
Machine learning models applied to medical records of hospitalized patients achieved high-accuracy predictions in a recent study and “should be seriously considered by clinicians to aid correct empiric therapy,” the authors said.

Pharmacist-led antimicrobial stewardship strategies worked in community hospitals
While both a modified preauthorization intervention and postprescription audit and review intervention were feasible, the latter led to more antibiotic de-escalation and may have decreased overall antimicrobial use.

HIV-related admissions declined from 1996 to 2016, but readmission rates were stable
An analysis of patients treated for HIV in North Carolina found that patients who were older or black had higher risk of hospitalization, as did those with more HIV RNA or lower CD4 counts.

Biomarkers may predict which medications are effective for patients hospitalized for COVID-19
Two studies looked at biomarkers that could be used to identify high-risk hospital patients who would likely benefit from medications for COVID-19, while another recent analysis provided reassuring data on the aftereffects of acute kidney injury during COVID-19 hospitalization.
