Biomarkers may predict which medications are effective for patients hospitalized for COVID-19
Two studies looked at biomarkers that could be used to identify high-risk hospital patients who would likely benefit from medications for COVID-19, while another recent analysis provided reassuring data on the aftereffects of acute kidney injury during COVID-19 hospitalization.

Hospitalizations for opportunistic infections in HIV declined from 2011 to 2018
While the rate of hospitalization for an opportunistic infection per 100,000 U.S. patients with HIV went down, the associated inpatient mortality rate held stable, at 5.9%, and disparities by age, sex, race, and insurance status were found in a recent study.

Switch to oral antibiotics noninferior for low-risk patients with S. aureus bacteremia

De-escalation of antibiotics effective in Enterobacterales bacteremia, Spanish trial finds
The pragmatic trial found similarly high cure rates and no difference in serious adverse events between patients who continued on an antipseudomonal beta-lactam and those de-escalated to an antibiotic without antipseudomonal activity.

Risk factors may not accurately identify complicated Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia
The Infectious Diseases Society of America's criteria for determining complicated S. aureus bacteremia had low to moderate predictive value and could lead to unnecessary antibiotic treatment, according to a prospective cohort study in the Netherlands.
