Antibiotic use common during asthma hospitalizations, associated with longer stay
For patients receiving systemic corticosteroids during an asthma hospitalization, getting antibiotics in addition wasn't associated with any reduction in treatment failure, according to a large retrospective study.

Penicillin skin testing de-escalated antibiotic prescribing, saved patients money
Among patients with reported penicillin allergy, nearly all had a negative result, which was associated with increased use of penicillin or cephalosporin and hundreds of dollars of cost savings compared to those who were not tested.

Study finds limited value to procalcitonin in identifying BSI on admission
Among patients with suspected bloodstream infections (BSIs) who had blood cultures and a procalcitonin test on admission, the sensitivity of procalcitonin at a cutoff of 0.5 ng/mL was 68%, and empiric antibiotic therapy use was not meaningfully different with positive or negative results.
