Disparities seen in postdischarge care for Medicaid beneficiaries
A study in Alabama found that 58% of Medicaid beneficiaries with diabetes and heart failure did not receive guideline-recommended care after hospitalization. Risk of inadequate follow-up was particularly high among patients who were Black or Hispanic.

Stigmatizing language about OUD common in hospital records, associated with less follow-up
The most common term was “abuse,” which appeared in two-thirds of hospital discharge summaries for patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) who were admitted for infectious complications of injection opioid use.

New consult service dramatically increased use of medication for alcohol use disorder
A third of inpatients with alcohol use disorder who were seen by an addiction consult service during their stay received a new prescription for related medication, compared to less than 1% of similar patients hospitalized before the service launched.

Clinicians had many reasons for not using their secure texting system, study finds
Responses to a survey on barriers to adoption of a hospital system's secure texting platform had five main themes: lack of familiarity, perceiving it as unnecessary and burdensome, perceiving it as an intrusion, battery drain, low usage by others, and lack of trust in it to function as needed.

Availability of postdischarge care associated with readmission rates
Hospitals in areas with more primary care physicians and licensed nursing home beds per capita had lower readmission rates for acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, and pneumonia, a new study found.

Dementia associated with increased risk of death or readmission after discharge
