Anemia common after hospitalization for critical illness
A cohort study in one Minnesota county found that anemia prevalence was 80% at discharge and 56%, 52%, and 45% at three months, six months, and 12 months, respectively, in patients discharged from the ICU who were alive and had data available.

Thiamine not associated with improved mortality in septic shock
In a retrospective observational study of more than 68,000 patients in Japan, the 28-day mortality rate was 19.2% in those who received thiamine soon after hospital admission versus 17.8% in those who did not.

Individualized short-course antibiotics noninferior to usual care for VAP
In a randomized open-label trial, 41% of ICU patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) who received antibiotics for seven days or less died or had pneumonia recurrence at 60 days versus 44% of those who received usual care.

Low-performing hospitals can improve quality for in-hospital cardiac arrest over time
A study found that while percentile rankings for risk-standardized survival rates remained generally consistent during follow-up periods at 45.2% of 166 study hospitals, 21.4% of bottom-performing hospitals exhibited substantial improvements on this quality metric.
