Antibiotics with extended anaerobic coverage didn't improve outcomes in aspiration pneumonia
Patients with aspiration pneumonia who received extended anaerobic coverage had no reduction in mortality risk and a significantly higher risk of Clostridioides difficile than those prescribed limited anaerobic coverage.

New combo antibiotic shows success against complicated urinary tract infections
Microbiologic and clinical recovery occurred in 70.6% of hospitalized patients randomized to an investigational beta-lactam and beta-lactamase inhibitor combination for urinary tract infection compared to 58% of patients given meropenem, an industry-funded trial found.

Algorithms predicted antibiotic resistance profiles of inpatients' bacterial infections
Machine learning models applied to medical records of hospitalized patients achieved high-accuracy predictions in a recent study and “should be seriously considered by clinicians to aid correct empiric therapy,” the authors said.

Individualized short-course antibiotics noninferior to usual care for VAP
In a randomized open-label trial, 41% of ICU patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) who received antibiotics for seven days or less died or had pneumonia recurrence at 60 days versus 44% of those who received usual care.
