Excess days in acute care may improve performance measurement for hospitals
A study found that replacing 30-day readmission rates with a measure of excess days in acute care would change about a quarter of penalties for targeted conditions under the Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program.

Readmission penalties didn't improve COPD exacerbation care
The percentage of patients hospitalized with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who received recommended care increased at a rate of 0.16% per month before implementation of the Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program compared to 0.01% per month in the four years after.

A retrospective analysis of Maryland hospital patients found that 30-day readmission rates varied from 14.1% to 12.5% with the disadvantage level of patients' home neighborhoods and from 14.8% to 11.6% with a hospital's safety-net status.

Hospital care quality more likely a factor in early versus late readmissions
