Intermittent multidrug IV therapy potentially useful in refractory Mycobacterium abscessus pulmonary disease
In a small study of 36 patients in South Korea, 62% and 12% of those with M. abscessus disease and 80% and 60% of those with M. massiliense disease had at least one negative culture and culture conversion, respectively.

Inappropriate CAP diagnosis common in hospitalized adults
A prospective cohort study of 48 hospitals in Michigan found that 12% of patients hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) appeared to have been diagnosed incorrectly and that of these, 87.6% received a full course of antibiotics.

Pulmonary rehabilitation associated with fewer readmissions for COPD patients
Only 1.5% of studied patients began pulmonary rehabilitation within 90 days of discharge from a hospitalization for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but their rate of readmission within a year was 56.4%, compared to 64.6% in patients who did not begin rehab.

Personalized steroid dose more effective than fixed dose in COPD exacerbations
Treatment failure was less common among hospitalized patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who received personalized corticosteroid therapy, guided by a dosing scale, than in those who received a 40-mg/d fixed dose of prednisolone or the equivalent, a Chinese study found.

RSV, other viruses associated with severe respiratory disease, length of stay in adult inpatients
Hospital patients with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), human metapneumovirus, or parainfluenza virus were more likely to require noninvasive or invasive ventilation than general medicine patients who did not test positive for any of those viruses, a national study found.
